This project explores how people understand new word combinations by examining the balance between inherent meanings and contextual influences. Using psycholinguistic techniques and big data, it aims to clarify how these factors affect interpretation, benefiting language processing and theoretical linguistics.
Languages always change, and existing words are constantly combined into novel combinations such as ‘trout pout’ or ‘bucket list’.
Surprisingly, little is known about the actual processes and resources humans use to understand these novel combinations.
