This project establishes the common dandelion as a model plant to study root secondary metabolites and their role in protecting against below-ground herbivores. It aims to enhance understanding of plant-environment interactions and provide resources for further research on this ecologically significant species.
Plants invest much energy into synthesizing root secondary metabolites which are assumed to improve plant fitness by protecting the plant against below ground herbivores.
Testing this paradigm however has remained difficult due to the lack of suitable model plants.
