This project explores the political culture surrounding Elizabeth I through a comparative analysis of dramatic texts from across Europe. It aims to integrate these works into a broader understanding of cultural exchange and debate during the early modern period.
The enduring fascination in anglophone research with the political culture of Elizabethan England has often served to occlude the fact that responses to the Tudor monarch were formulated across renaissance Europe. A pan-European range of dramatic texts bears witness to the anxiety and consuming interest which surrounded Elizabeth I.
