ClearPath focuses on understanding how the brain clears amyloid-beta peptides, which are linked to Alzheimer’s disease. The project investigates the endocytic pathways in brain endothelial cells and their role in preventing disease progression through innovative in vitro models and bioinformatics.
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is an age-associated, irreversible neurodegenerative disorder. Α fundamental neuropathological hallmark of this disease is the accumulation of the amyloid-beta (Aβ) peptide in the extracellular space and its aggregation in the brain.
Interestingly, critical role for a healthy brain is played by clearance mechanisms of endothelial cells, which traverse the Αβ peptide through the Blood Brain Barrier (BBB), a highly selective semipermeable border.
