This project explores the historical context of child prodigies to understand contemporary views on giftedness. By analyzing cultural and scientific representations in 19th and early 20th century France, it aims to bridge psychological research with historical perspectives on gifted children.
Although there is no scholarly agreement on how to define “giftedness”, there is a consensus on why it is important: understanding giftedness, and especially, gifted children, means understanding human potential and development.
Conceptions of giftedness affect education and parenting, and can create unrealistic expectations in adults and children.
