This project investigates the role of strigolactones, plant metabolites that facilitate communication with other organisms in the soil. It aims to uncover their dual function as both beneficial signals for mycorrhizal fungi and cues for parasitic plants, exploring the evolutionary implications of these interactions.
Plants secrete metabolites to communicate with other organisms in their rhizosphere.
An exciting example of rhizosphere signalling molecules are the strigolactones.
These are used by the friends of plants, the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, for host detection but also by their enemies, root parasitic plants.
