The project focuses on improving the predictive capabilities of carbon fiber reinforced composites under impact loading. By developing a new methodology that incorporates uncertainty in material properties, it aims to enhance the design of lightweight and damage-tolerant aerospace structures.
Carbon fibre reinforced composites (CFRP) have been increasingly used in aeronautical/aerospace structures given their outstanding specific stiffness and strength.
However, CFRPs exhibit weak through-thickness strength, making them susceptible to impact damage, a design driver for aerostructures.
Induced impact damage may reduce the compressive strength of the structure, and the inherent complex damage mechanisms of CFRP are difficult to predict.
