The CAVE project aims to digitally analyze and edit ancient and medieval commentaries on Vergil's Aeneid. By employing digital humanities, it seeks to reconstruct the cultural and educational contexts in which the poem was studied, enhancing our understanding of its historical significance.
The Aeneid, Vergil’s masterpiece, published in 17 BC, two years after the death of the author, is universally recognised as the most important Roman epic poem.
Since the very beginning of its circulation, in the 1st c. AD, it has drawn the attention of philologists and has been included in the school teaching of Latin grammar and rhetoric; in the following centuries an increasing number of commentaries on the Aeneid has been produced, engaging generations of scholars up to modern times.
