This project focuses on identifying and characterizing cells in the heart that have the potential for repair following heart failure. It aims to enhance cell purification and stimulation techniques to improve the effectiveness of cell-based therapies for heart transplantation.
Heart failure as a result of myocardial infarction or ischemic heart disease is a major health problem in Europe.
Currently the only long term solution is heart transplantation but one in three patients die while awaiting a match.
