The CALIDE project focuses on converting racemic mixtures of chiral molecules into single enantiomers using light and a photocatalyst. This innovative method aims to reduce waste in the production of enantiomerically pure compounds, which are essential in various fields like medicine and agriculture.
Molecules are chiral if they exist in two forms, called enantiomers, which behave like image and mirror image.
In many applications, e.g. in medicine, nutrition, and crop protection, chiral molecules are required as a single enantiomer (enantiomerically pure compound) but not as a mixture (racemate).
