This project investigates the impact of Soviet legacies on economic development in post-Soviet Central Asia. It focuses on how local economists and officials influenced development practices and policies after the USSR's collapse, shaping the region's transition to market economies.
The landscape of post-Soviet Central Asia (Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrygzstan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan) is littered with the physical remnants of Soviet development, both positive health clinics and schools and negative - decaying factories, polluted soil, and dried out rivers.
Less visible are Soviet developments political, intellectual, and institutional legacies.
