This research investigates the role of presenilin 2 protein in protecting against the accumulation of neurotoxic amyloid beta peptides, which are linked to Alzheimer's disease. The project explores cellular mechanisms and potential therapeutic pathways using both in vitro and in vivo models.
Accumulation of neurotoxic amyloid beta peptides (Ab) in the brain is considered to be the central event in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD).
Ab is released from the beta-amyloid precursor protein (APP) during specialised processing events.
