This project investigates postoperative delirium and cognitive dysfunction in surgical patients, aiming to establish biomarkers for risk prediction. By combining neuroimaging and genetic analyses, it seeks to improve decision-making and develop new therapies for these conditions.
Postoperative delirium (POD) is characterized by the progressive deterioration of sensory/cognitive function after surgery with incidences of up to 30-80%.
It is frequently followed by postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) which tends to persist over time.
