This project focuses on understanding the biomechanical factors that lead to heart attacks caused by plaque rupture in arteries. It aims to develop advanced imaging techniques to create detailed 3D models of coronary arteries, enhancing the prediction of plaque behavior and treatment outcomes.
Myocardial infarction is responsible for nearly 40% of the mortality in the western world and is mainly triggered by rupture of vulnerable atherosclerotic plaques in the coronary arteries.
Biomechanical parameters play a major role in the generation and rupture of vulnerable plaques. I was the first to show the relationship between shear stress – one of the biomechanical parameters - and plaque formation in human coronary arteries in vivo.
