This project focuses on generating functional beta cell implants from stem cells to treat diabetes, aiming to restore insulin production. It combines preclinical and clinical research to optimize conditions for beta cell maturation and assess the implants' effectiveness in patients.
Despite improved treatment, diabetes remains a chronic disease with major health risks and heavy burden on patients and society.
Serious forms are caused by depletion in pancreatic beta cells and associated loss in insulin’s homeostatic control throughout life.
