The project explores the social, cultural, and material history of automata in Renaissance Italy, focusing on Milan, Venice, and Florence from 1400 to 1600. It examines the symbolic functions of these machines beyond utility, linking them to philosophy, power representation, and knowledge-seeking activities.
This interdisciplinary project aims to innovatively fill a gap in the fast-growing historiography on automata, focussing on the social, cultural and material history of these types of machines in Renaissance Italy.
