This project focuses on enhancing cancer treatment through improved radiotherapy techniques using hadron and nanoparticle-enhanced therapies. By understanding nanoscale processes induced by radiation, the project aims to optimize treatment effectiveness while minimizing damage to healthy tissues.
Cancer, the second most common form of death after cardiovascular disease, is a major European health concern.
In 2006, 3.1 million new cases were diagnosed and 1.7 million deaths were attributed to cancer within Europe.
The European Commission has a “European Partnership for Action against Cancer” (IP/09/1380) with the aim of reducing the number of cancer cases by 15% by 2020. A key challenge is to “Develop a more coordinated approach to cancer-related research across Europe”.
