The AEGIS project aims to revolutionize waterborne transport in Europe by developing innovative systems that enhance the efficiency and automation of shipping. It seeks to address existing challenges in the sector, promoting a shift from road to water transport to reduce congestion and environmental impact.
The European maritime transport policy as well as national governments recognizes the importance of the waterborne transport systems as key elements for general and sustainable growth in Europe.
In line with the EU Transport White Paper 30% of road freight over 300 km should shift to other modes such as rail or waterborne transport by 2030, and more than 50 % by 2050.
So far, this ambition has failed spectacularly.
In the period 1995 to 2016 total freight increased with approximately 30%.
