This project introduces a method called 'pathway swapping' to redesign the metabolic networks of microbes for industrial applications. By relocating genes responsible for central carbon metabolism to a synthetic chromosome, it aims to enhance the efficiency of engineered microbes in bio-based processes.
Replacement of petrochemistry by bio-based processes is key to sustainable development and requires microbes equipped with novel-to-nature capabilities.
The efficiency of such engineered microbes strongly depends on their native metabolic networks.
