This project develops smart sandwich structures that enhance impact resistance by integrating multifunctional materials. It focuses on predicting dynamic responses, local damage initiation, and active control of structural responses to minimize impact forces and efficiently harvest energy.
Among other structural configurations, sandwich structures consisting of composite faces and foam or honeycomb core exploit their constituent material properties to the maximum by exhibiting highest flexural stiffness to mass ratios.
On the other hand, their brittle behavior by high loading rates, as in the case of impact loading, leads to initiation and propagation of damage in the form of cracks and delaminations.
