This project aims to enhance potato crop resilience to high temperatures by identifying and breeding for thermotolerance traits. It involves screening potato genotypes and analyzing their responses to elevated temperatures to improve tuber yield under stress conditions.
For many commercial potato cultivars, tuber yield is optimal at average day time temperatures in the range of 14-22˚C.
Further rises in ambient temperature can reduce or completely inhibit potato tuber production, with damaging consequences for both producer and consumer.
Despite centuries of potato breeding, high temperature tolerance has not been significantly improved.
