The BEE NATURAL project studies honeybee populations that have survived without mite control to understand their resistance to Varroa destructor and associated viruses. It aims to identify genetic traits that contribute to this resistance, enhancing future breeding programs for healthier bee populations.
The ectoparasitic mite, Varroa destructor, vectors lethal honeybee viruses, in particular Deformed wing virus (DWV) and is unarguably the leading cause of honeybee (Apis mellifera) colony mortality world-wide causing critical economic and ecological consequences for pollination-dependent crop production and wild plant biodiversity, respectively.
