This project aims to develop a new treatment strategy for melanoma patients who have developed resistance to BRAF inhibitors. By using Histone Deacetylase inhibitors after a drug holiday, the goal is to achieve lasting tumor regression in resistant melanomas, supported by clinical trials and translational studies.
Some 50% of human melanoma tumors have activating mutations in the BRAF gene. BRAF inhibitor drugs given either alone or in combination with MEK inhibitors have improved progression-free and overall survival in patients with BRAF mutant metastatic melanoma.
